On Monday, 27 July, students from Year 1M and 1P enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Bird Habitat with parent volunteers, family members and staff.
In perfect winter weather, students explored the habitat’s natural, managed and constructed features while learning about the people and organisations that help care for this important local environment. They also discovered how everyone can play a role in protecting community spaces.
A highlight of the day was observing the many ibises and their enormous nests, with one student affectionately naming the nesting area “Ibis Island”. Using bird identification guides kindly provided by Chappy Phil, students became nature detectives, identifying birds, butterflies and flowers throughout the habitat.
Students shared their favourite moments:
“I loved seeing the birds sitting on their nests.” – Ashlynn
“Now I really know what Ibis Island is like. An island covered in ibises.” – Spencer
“I really liked the birds. I liked watching them fly.” – Elin
“It was so fun being with my mum for two hours and I really liked seeing the big nests.” – Jude
The excursion was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with their local environment, develop their observation skills and deepen their appreciation of local wildlife. Thank you to all the parents and family members who helped make the day such a success.
